Jessi Morgan Devotions for the Christian Heart Podcast

Do people see God in you?

Jessi Morgan Season 1 Episode 19

Text if you need me? Prayer or just need encouragement…

You see let’s try something different. Let’s showcase our faith first with actions and emotions first before adding anything verbal to it. Let people wonder about you so then you can plant that seed of people seeing God in you.

Key passages
Genesis 39:2-5

The LORD was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. When his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD gave him success in everything he did, Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned. From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the LORD blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the LORD was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field.

Genesis 41:38-39

So Pharaoh asked them, “Can we find anyone like this man, one in whom is the spirit of God?”

Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one so discerning and wise as you.

1 John 4:12-13

No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit.

1 John 4:12-13

No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit.

When my daughter was in the hospital for 120+ days you can imagine how stressful that could be. But the first thing my husband and I committed to was to exude positivity at all times. Which meant treating people in the NICU with kindness and respect at all times. That was our goal. We just felt like that was the right thing to do despite how nervous, stressed or scared we felt at times.

My mindset was that these people at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, especially the nurses were doing a very high stress job keeping these delicate babies comfortable and alive at all times. Each baby had special needs, special dietary nutrition and more. So why am I going to be difficult to someone with my child 24/7?

Unfortunately many parents in there, didn’t have the mindset we did. I remember once I walked pass a room and the parent said to the nurse, “I prefer someone else to watch my baby because you take way too long to see what I need for my baby and me, its been 10 minutes!” Mind you to keep it in perspective, each nurse per 12 hour shift is in charge of 2 babies, one baby with extreme needs and the other is healthier and doesn’t need extreme attention. The mother who said that had the baby who was heading home in 5 days and she was waiting on the nurse to get her a towel so she can take a shower before the baby’s next feeding. And the nurse was busy with the other baby who was fighting to just live.

I remember that nurse and how well she handled that. The next day, that same nurse had Sage and we spoke through out the day and I thanked her for giving me such a great update on Sage when I came to visit. And the first thing she said to me was this, “I was so excited to have Sage for the first time, I always hear about her and how amazing her parents are and my peers were not lying. You and your husband are just special, never met people like you.”

What a feeling. A week later, I had that same nurse again and we were talking about our personal lives a bit and I planted the seed that I was a Christian. She looked at me with big eyes and said, “OMG you are a sister in Christ! Now I see why you were different.”

You see let’s try something different. Let’s showcase our faith first with actions and emotions first before adding anything verbal to it. Let people wonder about you so then you can plant that seed of people seeing God in you.

It always makes me laugh when I see a bumper sticker on a car that says “I love Jesus” or “WWJD” aka (What Would Jesus Do?) and then the same car cuts you off or is involved with a hit and run. Like how can you have something on your car representing the Savior and then you drive off and give the middle finger? I never ever get that. You put a label up like that, you gotta take that seriously and be aware of what you represent.

So what is your goal? How do you want to be seen as a person first and then how will you reveal what your faith walk is after?

People automatically knowing there’s something different about you without a clear explanation to me is my current focus and ideal situation for myself. That’s my goal in life now, I don’t need to wear a shirt that says “I’m a Jesus Follower” always. I can still show God in me through my works, my actions after salvation. As we all know what James 2:26 -

As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

So...

The Bible story I just reread recently was about Joseph, and when Pharaoh appointed him 2nd in command of Egypt. Pharaoh had two disturbing dreams that no one could interpret. The Pharaoh’s cupbearer then remembered Joseph and Pharaoh instructed for Joseph to come to him. After Joseph interpreted the dream of God telling the ruler there would be 7 years of abundance of food and 7 years of famine, Pharoah loved Joseph’s advice on how to prepare and then made him 2nd in command.

But what struck me was when Pharaoh said according to scripture:

Genesis 41:38-39

So Pharaoh asked them, “Can we find anyone like this man, one in whom is the spirit of God?”

Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one so discerning and wise as you.”

Two parts struck me, “God has made all this known to you” and “spirit of God”

Two phrases I would strive to be associated with. What a powerful feeling if someone outside your immediate family tells you “God has made that known to you” or “you  are filled with the spirit of God” without you having to boast about your faith directly. That is special.

I’m the type of person who flocks to someone who appears silent and humble. I prefer that because it makes me want to know more. My dad has always inspired me to be that way, when I know a lot of times I am not! Haha. When there’s a major discussion going on and people are getting loud, my dad will just sit there and observe. I see it all the time and when he does speak, people listen carefully. And usually my dad takes the high road and he always tries to put God in every situation. Maybe that’s why people always view my dad as a godly man. They see God in Him.

I want that. I know whoever is listening would love that too but probably think they can never get there. But you can. It takes commitment not time. It took an intense experience for me that occurred just a year ago to appreciate God more and it’s changed my thinking at 37 years old. You can adjust life a bit so people can see there’s something special about you. And that special is your faith, them seeing God in you. Love this verse here...

1 John 4:12-13

No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit.

Amen. Let’s pray.
